The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is one of the most iconic landmarks in Las Vegas and a globally recognized symbol of the city.
The sign was designed in 1959 by Betty Willis, a local graphic artist. She aimed to create a sign that captured the glamour and excitement of Las Vegas. It was commissioned by Ted Rogich, a local businessman, who wanted an eye-catching sign to welcome visitors arriving on the Las Vegas Strip. It incorporates mid-century Googie design elements, popular in the 1950s and 60s, reflecting the futuristic and optimistic aesthetic of the era.
​The sign symbolizes the city’s ethos—glamorous, inviting, and unapologetically bold. It embodies the spirit of Las Vegas as an entertainment and leisure capital.​ In 2009, the sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places, cementing its cultural importance. The sign initially stood alone without dedicated parking, but in 2008, Clark County added a parking lot to improve accessibility for visitors.​ In 2014, the sign’s neon lights were retrofitted with solar panels, making it more energy-efficient.
