Las Vegas Sign
The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is one of the most iconic landmarks in Las Vegas and a globally recognized symbol of the city.
The sign was designed in 1959 by Betty Willis, a local graphic artist. She aimed to create a sign that captured the glamour and excitement of Las Vegas. It was commissioned by Ted Rogich, a local businessman, who wanted an eye-catching sign to welcome visitors arriving on the Las Vegas Strip. It incorporates mid-century Googie design elements, popular in the 1950s and 60s, reflecting the futuristic and optimistic aesthetic of the era.
The sign symbolizes the city’s ethos—glamorous, inviting, and unapologetically bold. It embodies the spirit of Las Vegas as an entertainment and leisure capital. In 2009, the sign was added to the National Register of Historic Places, cementing its cultural importance. The sign initially stood alone without dedicated parking, but in 2008, Clark County added a parking lot to improve accessibility for visitors. In 2014, the sign’s neon lights were retrofitted with solar panels, making it more energy-efficient.
