The Desert Inn
The Desert Inn was a historic hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. This photo was taken of the entire staff in the 1950's. Conceived by Wilbur Clark, it opened on April 24, 1950. However, due to financial difficulties, Clark had to sell his share to the Cleveland mobster Moe Dalitz and his partners, though Clark remained the face of the hotel. The casino was one of the largest in Las Vegas when built and it had an 18-hole golf course, the only one on the Strip at the time.
The Desert Inn was known for hosting top-tier entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Liberace. It was a major venue for high-profile performances during the 1950s and 1960s.
Over the years, the property changed hands several times. In the late 1990s, it was acquired by ITT Sheraton, which later sold it to Starwood Hotels & Resorts. In 2000, Steve Wynn purchased the Desert Inn, closing it later that year to make way for the Wynn which opened in 2005.
