The Sky Room

The Sky Room lounge, at the top of a three-story tower, was the tallest structure on the Las Vegas Strip when Desert Inn opened in April 1950.

At night the Sky Room is illuminated by tiny pin-point “stars” from the blue-sky ceiling, broken only occasionally by mesh wiring representing clouds. The entire effect is designed to give the impression of “floating in the sky.”

Visible in the distance of several of these photos facing northeast over the pool, is the tree-lined property with a home, later known as the Howard Hughes Green House.
