The film tells the story of Ben Sanderson (played by Nicolas Cage), a Hollywood screenwriter whose life is spiraling out of control due to severe alcoholism. After losing his job and alienating everyone around him, Ben decides to move to Las Vegas with the sole intention of drinking himself to death. He cashes in everything he owns and heads to Vegas, fully resigned to his fate.

In Las Vegas, Ben meets Sera (played by Elisabeth Shue), a beautiful but lonely prostitute. The two form an unlikely bond as they enter into a complicated, tragic relationship. Despite their emotional connection, both are caught in their own cycles of destruction — Ben with his alcoholism and Sera with her life as a sex worker, marked by abuse from her pimp.

Their relationship is defined by an unspoken agreement: Sera accepts Ben’s self-destruction and never asks him to stop drinking, while Ben never judges or tries to change Sera’s life.
